The Disappearance of Emily H. by Barrie Summy

The Disappearance of Emily HHaving just moved from Detroit to New York, we meet Raine as she is preparing to register for 8th grade.  Raine has a special gift; she collects people’s sparkles, which is a glimpse of a person’s memory.

Growing up, Raine lived with her grandmother, but after she died, Raine’s mother began taking care of her.  Raine’s grandmother also had the ability to read sparkles.

Raine is quick to learn who the mean girls in the school are, but unfortunately two of them are in cross-country with her.  While walking her dog, Raine sees a missing sign for Emily Huvar.  Emily is a 13-year-old girl who disappeared a few months ago.  Raine learns that she and her mother moved into Emily’s house.

As Raine delves into people’s memories, she learns enough to make her want to solve the case of Emily’s disappearance.  Will she get to the bottom of the mystery or is there more to this case than just a missing girl?

I highly recommend this book.  I was immediately drawn in and was enthralled until the end.  This was a great mystery with plenty of twists and turns.  The bullying throughout broke my heart a little, but unfortunately, it’s a harsh reality of what people go through in today’s society.

Skies of Ash by Rachel Howzell Hall

Skies of AshThis is the second book with Homicide detective Lou Norton and her partner Colin.

When Norton and Colin are called out to a fire, which has killed a mother and her two children, they must determine if it’s a murder suicide or did someone else cause this deadly fire?

Their investigation takes them all over the place with many potential suspects, including the husband and the couples’ best friends.

At the same time, Lou is dealing with the hurt of a cheating husband and her marriage is on the rocks. Can Lou keep it together long enough to close this case? Will they ever figure out the truth of what happened that night?

This book had just enough twists and turns to keep me guessing all the way to the end. I look forward to more books by this author.

Fractured by Kate Watterson

FracturedHomicide detective Ellie MacIntosh and her partner Jason Santiago are investigating a couple of very gruesome homicides.  They aren’t having much luck finding any leads. When the murderer strikes again they start to feel the pressure to find a possible serial killer.

Ellie and Jason are both seeing the same court appointed therapist, Georgia, who also happens to be treating a disturbed young woman who is having issues with her roommate. When this young woman starts insinuating that there may be connections between the murders and her roommate, Georgia must make a choice between informing Ellie and Jason or keeping patient/client confidentiality.

This is the 3rd installment in this series with Ellie as the main character. Jason was introduced in the 2nd book. This was the first book I’ve read by this author and it flowed fairly well, although I was very disappointed by the ending. It seems to just stop abruptly and I felt like there were chunks of the story missing. All in all, this was a good thriller with a good story line.

Land of Shadows by Rachel Howzell Hall

Land of ShadowsHomicide detective Elouise ‘Lou’ Norton and her new partner, Colin, are called out to a condo construction site for what initially appears to be a teenage suicide.

After viewing the scene, Lou is convinced that this is a homicide not suicide.  As she delves deeper into the case she starts finding more and more evidence that this murder is related to the disappearance of her sister, Tori.

Thirty years ago, Tori and Lou walked to the store where Tori was caught shoplifting. Lou was terrified and immediately ran home. That was the last time she ever saw her sister. Obsessed with finding out what happened to Tori, Lou will go to any lengths to find the murderer.

With her job and marriage on the line, Lou will not give up.  As she gets closer to the truth she also gets closer to a violent killer who already has her in his sight.

I enjoyed the characters in this book and the story moved along very well. I’ll definitely be watching for more books from this author.

Black Lies, Red Blood by Kjell Eriksson

Black Lies, Red BloodSwedish policewoman Ann Lindell is a great detective. She has solved many mysteries, worked multiple cases and has even gone so far as to take time off her maternity leave to discover a vicious murderer. Ann’s personal life has never been so great. Until she meets Anders Brant, a journalist that Ann has a great intimate relationship with.

Anders mysteriously disappears and a homeless man’s body is found with his phone number in his pocket. Ann must determine what is more important telling her partner about her connection with Anders or keeping quiet and trying to locate him herself. At the same time Ann is refusing to give up on a missing teenage girl’s case.

The importance of these two cases is they may be linked to each other and Ann’s boyfriend may have been on to this in his own investigating. Will Ann be able to solve these two crimes?

This is another great story by Kjell Eriksson involving detective Ann Lindell. This, and his other stories of Ann’s detective work, is well worth reading.

Notorious by Allison Brennan

notoriousThis was the first book by Allison Brennan that I have read and I enjoyed it.

In Notorious, Allison Brennan introduces a new heroine, Maxine Revere, who hosts a true crime type of television show where she investigates cold cases that have not been solved. When her old friend, Kevin, allegedly commits suicide, she returns to her home town for the funeral. Kevin’s little sister does not believe he committed suicide nor does she think he committed the murder of his high school girlfriend, and she begs Max to help her prove it. Kevin was acquitted of the murder, but a lot of people believed that he was guilty (including Max’s own family) and made his life very tough. Determined to prove once and for all that Kevin was innocent, Max finds an ally in a police detective who is willing to look at the case and help her find new evidence. But, someone will do anything to keep the truth buried.

With a mix of suspense and a little bit of romance, the story line kept me guessing right up to the very end.

Missing You by Harlan Coben

missing youI have read all of Harlan Coben’s books and really enjoyed them. Missing You is no exception.

Kat starts looking into her disappearance and finds out that his mother has supposedly gone off to another country with Kat’s ex fiancé after meeting him on the same online dating site where Kat found him. Devastated that she has missed her chance to find out why her fiancé left her all those years ago, she continues to try to find both of them. What she ends up finding is way more than she bargained for.

This suspense thriller moves along at a very fast pace and keeps you guessing right up to the very end. A++

the weight of bloodThis debut novel by Laura McHugh takes place in a small town deep in the Ozark Mountains. Precious Thing by Colette McBeth

precious thingThis debut thriller by Colette McBeth tells the story of a dark and twisted friendship between Rachel and Clara that began when they were teenagers. This book is told in a second person point of view that I didn’t particularly like because I thought it made it hard to follow the story, but it was still a good book.

Clara and Rachel were best friends throughout their school years, but when Clara turns 18 something happens that she isn’t able to handle and she has a breakdown. She is sent to a psychiatric hospital for awhile and Rachel has not seen or talked to her in 7 years.

Now in their late twenties, Rachel is a successful TV reporter and Clara’s life seems to be out of control. But, when Clara wants to start spending time with Rachel again, Rachel is pleased to renew their friendship. She is cautious though since Clara has changed and doesn’t seem much like herself anymore.

When Clara suddenly disappears, everyone, including Rachel, is looking for her and fears the worst. But, as weird things begin happening to Rachel she starts wondering if she ever knew Clara as well as she thought she did. As Rachel starts looking back over the past and the secrets that her and Clara had, she finds out that her entire life was a lie.

You’ll be left wondering who the crazy one in this story is.

Gemini by Carol Cassella

geminiWhen a Jane Doe came into Dr. Charlotte Reese’s hospital unconscious and fighting for life, she never dreamed how this patient would change her life. Normally when a Jane Doe enters the hospital someone claims them within 24-48 hours. However, when no one claims this woman, Dr. Reese is left wondering who she is and why no one has claimed her? As the woman’s life begins to consume Charlotte, her boyfriend, Eric, gets involved out of curiosity. When he decides to go in to see this woman he realizes how small the world can be.

From this point on Charlotte and Eric’s lives are impacted in ways they never thought possible. Eric is forced to face a past that he thought was gone and Charlotte is left to figure out where she belongs in all of it. Needless to say, the appearance of this mystery woman will change their lives forever.

The twist near the end of this book left my mind reeling. This is truly a love story, drama, and science lesson all wrapped into one book. Find out why the author calls this book “Gemini” by delving into its pages. I promise you won’t want to put it down.
