The Nethergrim by Matthew Jobin
The book opens with the introduction of Tristan, the greatest knight, and eventually Vithric, the greatest wizard. They join forces to protect the world from the Nethergrim and its creatures.
We are then introduced to three friends. Edmund, an avid reader of magical scrolls, Katherine, Edmund’s crush, trainer of royal horses, and John Marshal’s daughter, and Tom, a slave.
One night, some of the villagers are gathered at Edmund’s family’s tavern. There is talk of the upcoming fair to honor Tristan and of missing pigs. Strange things begin happening in the village. More animals have gone missing.
Suddenly, from out of the dark, a high pitch scream is heard by Edmund, Tom, and Katherine. They race out to the darkness only to find a child face down dead. Edmund finds his younger brother Geoffrey’s knife covered in a blackish blue liquid, but his brother is nowhere to be seen.
Events begin to unfold rapidly. Will Edmund, Katherine, and Tom be able to stop the Nethergrim or will life as they know it cease to exist? It’s quite the surprise.
The Nethergrim reminded me of a cross between The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Though geared for a preteen age group, both young adults and adults would surely enjoy it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and would recommend adding it to your shelves. I would really like to see this one on the big screen.
