I See You Made an Effort: Compliment, Indignities, & Survival Stories from the Edge of 50 by Annabelle Gurwitch

i see you made an effortThose of you who watched the TBS series Dinner and a Movie will remember the zany but lovable co-host Annabelle Gurwitch. It seems like forever ago when her snappy dialogue engaged silver screen audiences, and it’s great to see that her charming humor translates well to the written page. The awesome subtitle says it all: Compliments, Indignities, and Survival Stories from the Edge of 50. I can totally relate. In our youth-oriented culture, there is no shortage of ways to remind us middle-agers that it’s all downhill from here. As a not-so-willing participant, Gurwitch muses on all the glory (and the gory) that accompanies this inevitable journey.

Through a series of delightful and excruciatingly honest essays we find out such things as how the author tried to charm the pants off a nerdy Apple sales geek, avoid utter humiliation at a commercial audition, and jump on her son’s trampoline without dislocating any major body parts. It’s nice to know that Gurwitch can teach me a few things so I will be more than prepared when I endure much of the same (OK, minus the trampoline experiment).

One of the best parts of the book comes at the end with a series of anecdotes by her almost-50-something BFFs who give us a glimpse of what runs through their minds at 4 am. Read this book and then pass it along to your best girlfriend or anyone else you know who is on the verge of joining the Red Hat Society. As Gurwitch herself would say: “Bring It On!”
