The Melody of Secrets by Jeffrey Stepakoff
At the end of World War II a young German woman provides aid to an American pilot who was forced to bail out of his airplane. They make a connection, but are forced apart by the circumstances of the war.
Twelve years later on an Army base where her husband is building rockets for the space program, she runs into the pilot again. They reconnect and reminisce. The love she pushed aside all those years ago comes to the surface again. She must choose a life with a husband she is beginning to question and the pilot and a life she might have had. Meanwhile, she continues to perform with the town’s symphony, participates in a fundraiser concert, and ends up confronting civil rights issues.
Love, friendship, and history can all be found in this story. With an ending that is unpredictable, it is a wonderful read.
