The Double by George Pelecanos
Spero Lucas leaves you with no doubt of right and wrong. After returning home from serving in Iraq, he finds work with a defense attorney doing investigative work for his clients. Spero also picks up some work on the side retrieving stolen property.
One job Spero accepts is to retrieve a painting known as The Double for a woman, whose sadistic lover took off with the piece of valuable artwork. All the while Spero is trying to help the defense attorney protect his client, or at least cause reasonable doubt in the jury. The same incarcerated client gives Spero some information on an unsolved murder of a young girl. Spero spends his downtime with his mother, veterans from his platoon, and an unavailable married woman.
Even though Spero has some difficult choices to make in his personal life, he is still a genuinely good guy. I look forward to reading more of his adventures just to see how he skirts the edge of what’s legal to make things right.
