Ten Tiny Breaths by K.A. Tucker
One of the great things about reading books for this blog is the exposure to all different kinds of literary genres. This time I ventured into the world of New Adult. This relatively new category, geared toward readers between the ages of 18 and 20-something, puts things on a whole new level. Not to date myself here, but I really wish this kind of book was around when I was that age. I remember going straight from Beverly Cleary to Harlequin Romances; an awkward jump to be sure, but that’s what we had 30+ years ago.
Fast forward to 2013 and Ten Tiny Breaths, the latest from YA author K.A. Tucker. This super-intense novel stars Kacey Cleary, age 20. On the run with her 15 year old sister Livie they end up in Miami to start a new life. Four years ago, Kacey survived a drunk driving accident that took the lives of both her parents, her best friend, and her boyfriend. Barely thriving, Kacey does her best Tough Girl impression just to make it through the days.
It is in their new apartment building that Kacey meets Trent Emerson, not your typical boy-next-door. The sexual attraction is immediate but Kacey doesn’t trust herself to get too close. Trent, wise beyond his 25 years, gives Kacey the room she needs even though he pushes her to spill her secrets. Little does Kacey know that Trent has a few secrets of his own. Consider this fair warning: the vast majority of the story revolves around their deep seated attraction, smoldering passion, and plenty of sexual innuendo.
But fear not, because other characters save the day and give the book its substance (after all, one can only read about Kacey’s lustful fantasies so many times). Storm, Mia, Livie, and even Cain, owner of the strip joint where Kacey bartends, add just the right amount of spice to keep the story interesting. Tucker seems like an old pro with her character development and doesn’t disappoint. Just when you think you’ve had enough boyfriend/girlfriend saga, (alas, showing my age again!) the author throws in a major surprise right before the ending. Even though I could see this one coming a mile away it makes for great post-teenage drama.
If your young female audience has been clamoring for this type of genre to hit your shelves, Ten Tiny Breaths is a great introduction to this hot new genre.
