The Never List by Koethi Zan
Thrillers are definitely my favorite type of book to read. I especially enjoy psychological thrillers, and the summary of Koethi Zan’s debut novel, The Never List, sounded like it was just up my alley.
Sarah and her best friend, Jennifer, keep a “never list” of actions to never do, but one evening they decide to go against that list and take a cab ride that changes their lives. The women are kidnapped and held hostage by a psychopath who uses them to advance his research in torture and brainwashing. The girls are held for three years in a basement with two other women who had been there even longer. Everyone but Jennifer made it out of the basement.
Ten years later, Sarah, living under an assumed name, is still dealing with the repercussions of the events, including her guilt over Jennifer not making it out. She, along with the two other women, are trying to prevent their kidnapper, Jack, from being paroled from prison. Eventually, they find themselves back at the house where their nightmare began and discover secrets so shocking and horrifying their lives will never be the same.
I really enjoyed Zan’s debut novel, and I will definitely be reading her next book. Anyone who enjoys thrillers along the lines of Gillian Flynn or Karin Slaughter will definitely want to read The Never List.
