The Heist by Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg

9780345549419 heistThe start of a new Evanovich series?  Oh yeah, baby!  Count me in!  As a self-proclaimed Stephanie Plum addict, this book had some big shoes to fill and I couldn’t wait to see how it sized up.

FBI Special Agent Kate O’Hare is on a mission to find Mr. Right.  As luck would have it, Mr. Right a.k.a. Nick Fox, is a con man she’s been tracking for a number of years.  After an elaborate hoax to steal the world’s most valuable red diamond, Kate literally sideswipes Nick and places him under arrest.

Nick’s day in court arrives and just when you think it’s over for him, he escapes.  Kate is more than ready to go after him, when her superior tells her she’s off the case.  As if!  She decides to take matters into her own hands.  Using her stockpile of vacation time, Kate enlists the help of her father, ex-military man Jack O’Hare, to hunt him down.

When she finds Nick and is ready to place him under arrest, again, Kate learns her boss and the Deputy Director of the FBI are there as well and are roping Nick and Kate into a bigger game than what Nick is playing.  Their mission is to bring in corrupt investment banker Derek Griffin who is in hiding.  Nick knows that to do this, they’re going to need more people.  They recruit Boyd Capwell, Wilma (Willie) Owens, Tom Underhill, Chet Kershaw and Kate’s dad.  Each has a major role and plenty of skill to contribute.  Will they pull off the con or go down like a sinking ship?

Though there are similarities between the Plum characters and the Heist characters, the book was exciting, funny, fast-paced, and full of unknowns. The characters were witty and full of a charm that will leave you smiling and shaking your head.

If you’re an Evanovich fan, you will without a doubt love this book.  If you’re a newbie to Janet Evanovich, this is a good starting point to wet your feet.  I wasn’t disappointed and can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

  1. Sounds very good. I loved Stephanie Plum, but was really disappointed in the movie (One for the Money)- the actress was not a good fit for the character. I think it would’ve been better in the TV series, not a movie.
Anyway, very excited to add this book to my summer list. Thank you for the review.

  2. I’m glad you enjoyed the book!
