The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes
In Beukes’ newest novel, The Shining Girls, readers follow along as Kirby Mazrachi tries to find the man who ravaged her and left her for dead. She is in a race for time, literally, as she tracks him through the stories of the present day and of the past. She starts to slowly put together a profile and a method to his madness.
Kirby needs to do all of this before he figures out she is on to him and before she realizes the monster she is looking for has been a shadow of hers and many other “shining girls” most of their lives.
I really enjoyed this book. It is fast paced and suspenseful, the characters are witty and defiant, especially Kirby. She is a strong determined young lady with a knack for fact finding while on a search for a predator.
But he’s not just any predator; he can time jump with the turn of a knob. A vicious opportunist who thinks he has found the answer to all his prayers; a collector of sorts. However his collection is focused on his wicked ideal.
The Shining Girls is exquisitely gory with a time traveling twist. This book surely survives the test of, dare I say, time.
